Just a Friendly Reminder - The 20's Start in Six Days



It would be a turbulent decade for the Jungle Country Club according to the Timeline of Events That Influenced the Growth of the Jungle Country Club Area (plus a few events that didn't).

1920 Prohibition begins, January 17
1920 Coffee Pot course (now the Sunset Golf and Country Club) opens on Snell Isle
1921-25 Boom years
1921 Hurricane hits St. Petersburg with 110 mph wind, severe damage
1921 St. Petersburg Museum of History is founded
1924 Lakewood Country Club opens (renamed in 2000 to St. Petersburg Country Club)
1924 Bear Creek Country Club opens (now Pasadena Yacht and Country Club)
1924 Gandy Bridge is opened, reducing travel time across the bay
1924 The Allen-Fuller Company purchased the golf course property and renamed it the Jungle Club.
1924 Gangplank and Jungle Prado (now Prada) shopping complex is built on Park Street by landowner and developer Walter P. Fuller.
1925 Willis Carrier introduces air-conditioning to the public at the Rivoli Theater in New York City.
1925 Yankees begin spring training in St. Petersburg at Crescent Lake Park
1925 What is now known as Jungle Prada Tavern began life in 1925 as a nightspot (and speakeasy) called the Gangplank. It was the first nightclub in St. Petersburg.
1925 The Vinoy Park Hotel is built
1926 Piper-Fuller Flying Field is built by Walter P. Fuller - it was the first airfield in St. Petersburg and the third in the state.
1926 Jungle Hotel opens on Feb. 10, 1926
1926 Million Dollar Pier is constructed, replacing the Municipal Pier
1928 Completion of the 273 mile (Tampa to Miami) Tamiami Trail
1928 WSUN radio begins broadcasting, some programming originating from the Jungle Hotel
1929 On April 17, 1929, Babe Ruth married Claire Hodgson, his second wife, in New York City. Upon the happy couple’s return to St. Petersburg they threw a lavish wedding reception at the Gangplank.
