In 1930, during a stay at the Jungle Hotel, Babe Ruth wrote a letter to the pupils of Central High School in Philadelphia encouraging them to work hard, live a clean life, save money and honor their parents.
Good advice, but Ruth wasn't exactly known for practicing any of those things. His parents died when he was young, he gambled away much of his income and his daughter Julia claimed he would drink a highball, smoke a cigar and chew tobacco ‒ all at the same time. But, to be fair, by 1930 he was getting his life in order and his advice may be the result of regretting years of doing the opposite and the toll it had taken on his health.
