Al Lang's Home in the Jungle

Beloved St. Petersburg mayor Al Lang lived in this Park Street home on Boca Ciega Bay across from the Jungle Country Club during his time as mayor, president of the Jungle Country Club, and as baseball ambassador who brought major league baseball to St. Petersburg.

According to city directories, Lang and his wife lived here on the south bank of what is now the Admiral Farragut Academy boat basin from 1916 until 1931. These were productive years for Lang, who served two terms as mayor (1916-1920) and who, in 1924, negotiated an agreement to bring the Yankees' spring training operations to St. Petersburg.

The house was demolished in 1931 when the property was acquired by Cincinnati insurance executive Frank C. Williams who built Casa Coe da Sol on the site.

Previously, Lang and his wife Marie lived at 336 Lang Court, a bungalow in a courtyard neighborhood that Lang developed soon after he moved to St. Petersburg from Pittsburgh in 1911. That house is still standing and is frequently the site of parties and historic tours.

In 1914, Lang was named president of the Jungle Country Club (at that time it was called the Country Club at Davista) and H. Walter Fuller gave Lang a tract of land across from the clubhouse so that he could build a new home near the golf course.
