 Today, April 27^th, is National Babe Ruth Day.

There is good reason to take pride in Babe Ruth’s annual golfing trek to what is now the Azalea neighborhood. His arrival every year put our neighborhood in newspaper headlines and on movie screens across the country. 

There is perhaps no celebrity of the era, or any era, who exceeded the public appeal of Ruth. He played a very large part in St. Petersburg history and especially in Jungle history. Coming to town for spring training was his job, but arriving a month early to play golf at the Jungle Country Club was his choice. For Ruth, golf was a passion and the golf course was a healthy respite from his busy celebrity lifestyle.
