Historical Context

In 1938, the Jungle Country Club continued to serve as a winter retreat for nationally prominent families, reflecting St. Petersburg’s role as a seasonal destination for America’s political and social elite. The photograph Cynthia Coolidge, then a young child, identified in contemporary press as the granddaughter of the late President Calvin Coolidge. Although the Coolidge family maintained a primary residence in New England, extended winter travel to Florida was common among affluent families of the era. The Jungle Country Club’s association with figures of national stature underscores its importance not merely as a local recreational facility, but as part of a broader network of elite winter resorts that helped shape St. Petersburg’s identity during the interwar period.
